Auger Drilling Method
Drilling system for silt and clay soils

Auger drilling method

In special civil engineering, the auger drilling method is in practice a predominantly clockwise system. The connections are based on 6 kt. or 8 kt. connections as well as threaded connections with or without mechanical locking.

The connection of the augers to each other works with snap pins, heavy-duty pins, U-pins, U-pins. A distinction is made between hollow augers and solid augers.

Method of operation & field of application

This drilling method in special civil engineering is used almost exclusively in silt and clay soils. The type of auger is selected according to whether the soil is cohesive or non-cohesive. If the geology is known, it is possible to create measuring points by drilling with the hollow stem auger.

Cohesive soils

In this type of soil, the hole "stands" after the auger is pulled out and does not collapse, so that augers with a closed base tube and with 6-kt. / 8-kt. connectors are used. Connectors are used.

  •  If the rotary tool of a hammer drill is used to advance the augers, an insertion end with a 6-kt. or 8-kt. outlet must be used.
  • If a slewing gear is connected to a connecting flange, no insertion end is used.
  • This connecting flange is equipped with a 6-kt. / 8-kt. connector. This connecting flange is equipped with a 6-kt. / 8-kt. connector, which serves as a connection to the screw.
  • The screws have a 6-kt. or 8-kt. socket on both sides. A connector is inserted or welded into this socket to extend the drill string, depending on the requirements.
  • At the end of the drill string, for drilling the holes, clay cutters, fishtail bits and rock drill bits as well as drill starters and auger catchers are used.
  • Advancing is done by the feed of the drilling rig.
  • The direction of rotation for auger drilling (6/8-edge connectors) is clockwise.

Non-cohesive soils

In non-cohesive soils, the hole may collapse after the drill string has been pulled. Augers with threaded connections are used, which have a central hollow tube with internal and external threads. Flushing can also be done through this hollow tube.

  •  If a hammer drill is used, an insertion end is used.
  • When used without flushing, the auger must be connected to the insertion end by means of a transition. When used with flushing, the auger is connected to the insertion end via an insert and flushing head.
  • If a slewing gear is used, for bores without flushing, the auger is to be connected to the slewing gear through the transition and the connecting flange.
  • In the case of bores with flushing, the flushing head is screwed to the associated flange and the auger is screwed on via the insert.
  • The flushing medium -air or water- is introduced via a flushing ring and runs through the central hollow tubes of the auger until it exits again at the flushing holes of the respective drill bit.
  • The advantages of flushing are, on the one hand, that it supports the extraction of the cuttings and, on the other hand, that it prevents the drilled material from penetrating into the hollow tube of the auger.
  • The different core bits in our range are provided with injection and flushing holes. When the augers are pulled out, the drill hole is compressed and stabilised by the hollow tube and by the injection holes. When the openings are closed by plugs, these plugs are pushed out by the grouting pressure and remain in the borehole.
  • Advancing is done by the feed of the drilling rig.
  • The direction of rotation for auger drilling (6/8-edge connectors) is clockwise.
Drill drive receptacle

The mounting for the drill drive is a component which we manufacture according to your specifications, but which we also stock to fit the most common drill motors. In addition to the square, the holder (shown here) has holes to attach the drill motor to the holder.

  • For example, for screw Ø115 x SW41: 500 mm to 3000 mm.

In addition to our standard diameters and standard lengths, we also offer customised solutions that deviate from the specified standard dimensions. In addition, the screw helix is reinforced with an armoured seam to increase wear resistance.

Flushing head

Zipp Industries GmbH & Co. KG also offers the flush drilling method with hollow augers in the field of auger drilling. With the help of the flushing head, which consists of various components, the flushing medium -air or water- is fed into the drill string. This causes the cuttings to be guided upwards in the annulus. The use of a one-sided flushing system has another positive effect: sand and clay are prevented from penetrating the drill string.

  • The mud heads are made of tempered steel and additionally surface-hardened.
  • The illustration is only an example. There are many different types of flushing heads in our programme.

We will be happy to advise you personally on the specific requirements of your conditions.
